Building a Shopify Store in 2026: What You Need to Know Before You Start

Shopify is one of the most recognisable names in e-commerce — and for good reason. It makes launching an online store genuinely simple. But like every platform, it has trade-offs. Before you commit your business to Shopify in 2026, here is what you should know.

What Shopify Does Really Well

Shopify is a hosted platform, meaning Shopify manages the servers, handles security updates, and takes care of infrastructure. You log in and run your store — no technical maintenance required. It is incredibly fast to set up, has a clean admin interface, and comes with solid built-in analytics. If you want to go from zero to selling in a week, Shopify makes that possible.

It also has a well-developed app marketplace (over 8,000 apps), good mobile apps for managing your store on the go, and reliable uptime. For businesses with a simple product catalogue and no unusual requirements, Shopify delivers a smooth experience.

Understanding the Costs

Shopify is not free — plans in 2026 range from around $29 to $299 per month (USD) for standard tiers, with Shopify Plus for enterprise users starting much higher. On top of the plan fee, Shopify charges a transaction fee on every sale if you do not use Shopify Payments. Apps add up quickly too — many essential functions (advanced filtering, subscription billing, custom pricing) require third-party apps at $10–$50+ per month each.

Where Shopify Falls Short

Flexibility is Shopify’s main limitation. The checkout process is difficult to customise without Shopify Plus. URL structures are fixed and not fully SEO-friendly — product URLs always contain “/products/” which is a minor but real SEO disadvantage compared to WordPress. Advanced content marketing (a full blog, landing pages, pillar content) is clunky on Shopify compared to WordPress.

You also do not fully “own” your store — if Shopify decides your products violate their terms (which has happened to businesses in niche categories), you can lose access to your storefront.

When Shopify Is the Right Call

Shopify makes sense if you have a straightforward product catalogue, want to launch quickly, and do not need heavy customisation. It is also a strong choice if you do not have a technical team and want a fully managed solution with predictable costs.
